Special Thanks to those who made this reunion possible: About Why are we celebrating? First and foremost, the Stanford Art Library has officially aquired the YLEM archive! This library is becoming the preeminent repository for artists and groups here in the Bay Area in the last half of the 20th century. We're historic! Why February? Howard Pearlmutter, who started the Graphics Gathering, is offering his Google Meet platform he uses for his annual February Digital Valentines Gatherings. Some history here: in 1980, Pearlmutter began showcasing digital technology and computer art at what he called Graphics Gatherings. YLEM founder Trudy Myrrh Reagan attended the first several of these, and confided to him her desire to form a group for artists using science and technology. He allowed her to recruit, and several became early YLEM members. Why 42nd? Trudy created the artwork for the poster for the February 14, 1981 "Computer Art, Software Aesthetics & Digital Valentines" Graphics Gathering. On that poster is the first mention of YLEM in print, and at that Gathering was the first time Trudy publicly announced her intention to create YLEM. That was 42 years ago! That day was a vivid moment that also turned into an annual tradition. Palo Alto, Santa Cruz, Harbin, Maui... and then as Howard later traveled the world, he continued the digital valentine tradition in Singapore, Israel, Australia... and in recent years online. Now that the Gathering's web video platform has proven to be solid & reliable, its time to use it for an YLEM Reunion! Why you? Our reunion will bring together amazing YLEMites from our rich 42 year history. We'll be mixing art presentations and panels and even a short movie about YLEM's origins & wider influence — together with plenty of conversation both looking back over our fun times & history making over the decades as well as looking forward towards more creative futures. Plan to be there! Please contact Trudy and Torrey at gathering@ylem.org about any archival materials you may have to contribute. You may flaunt them at the Gathering, and perhaps even donate them to the the Stanford Art Library collection. |
